I don’t have a tool to insert the wheel bearings into the rims, so I am using another method that works if you are careful. First take the inner ring and balls out of the old bearings. Then take an angle grinder and make a cut in the rings like on the picture. It doesn’t [...]

The first major part of my project is being rebuilt, it is the rear wheel. In this post I will fit the driven joint hub with dampers, the brake disc and bearings will follow in part II. I use soap to lubricate the rubber dampers because they have a very tight fit. Using a paint [...]

I decided to change the liquid I had in my parts washer with White Spirit, Mineral Spirit in USA. I am glad I did. White spirit is so much better as a cleaning fluid than the environmentally friendly organic degreaser fluid I had been using so far. I just have to tolerate the smell and [...]

I’ve finished the front rim today. Now it is cleaned, polished and cleaned again. I didn’t take a note of how long I used on this, but I would guess I used about 8 to 10 hours on it. Maybe because I was trying different methods in the beginning. The rear rim is actually looking [...]

Polishing is hard work! I am using a combination of finger power and a battery drill with a hard polishing disc. Earlier today I bought a pack of 8 kitchen scrubbing pads, the ones with a hard and a soft side. I’ve already worn out three of them. Click on the picture to see it [...]

The dirt on the rims is really holding on to the surface. On the picture is the result after cleaning with mineral spirits and rags, then using a polishing compound and more rags. I am going to spend many hours doing this.

Started the cleaning of the front rim today. I was stunned when I saw that my cleaning solvent and toothbrush actually started to wear away on the black paint on the rim. Stopped that immediately, didn’t know that this water based solvent was that strong. Had to wipe off the rim and clean it with [...]

I’ve been preparing to send the rims to powder coating, but today I spoke to a guy at a local paint shop. He saved me a lot of money. He told me that the paint on the rims are a special rubber compound, and that it wasn’t necessary to glass blast and paint them all [...]
